Are you taking your child to a child care centre in Wattle Grove or any Perth suburb? If you are, do they do their best to fight childhood obesity? According to a recent study, childhood obesity costs taxpayers a total of $17 million in Australia and New Zealand combined. Children who are obese average $367 of healthcare costs per year more than children with healthy weight levels.
At Cuddles Childcare Centres, we do our best to fight childhood obesity by providing five healthy meals every day. We know how hard it is to lose weight once you become obese. We also know how obese children can be stigmatised later in life.
It is important to nip childhood obesity in the bud. Children develop many of their lifelong habits before they turn six years of age. Parents can establish good habits in that time or bad habits. Here are some tips to help your child develop healthy habits that can last a lifetime.
Keep Their Snacks Healthy
Young children need to “refuel” many times a day. You can choose whether they get rocket fuel or sludge. Avoid sugary snacks, chips and biscuits. Instead, give them lean meats, vegetables, fruits, cheese and wholegrain breads.
Kids love juices and fizzy drinks, but both can contribute to obesity. Teach them to drink water whenever possible. Save the treats for special occasions such as birthdays and holidays. Water keeps them hydrated and healthy.
If you keep biscuits and lollies in the cupboard, your children will always want them. Don’t keep sugary treats, biscuits, lollies or any unhealthy foods in your cupboard. It’s the easiest way to say “no”when your child asks for unhealthy food.
Turn Meals into Quality Family Time
Young children love quality family time and they thrive on routine. Make it a routine for your meals to be the time of day when everyone in the family discusses their days with no distractions.
Encourage Movement and Sports
Encourage your child to get up and move. Also, encourage them to play any sport in which they show an interest. Exercise is vital to stopping obesity in its tracks.
