At Cuddles Childcare Centres serving various Perth suburbs such as Victoria Park, our motto is “Learning Through Play.” We know that children learn their best and fastest when they are fully engaged with the outside world, exploring and experimenting. We provide numerous opportunities for directed group and individual play, allowing children to progress at their own natural speed.
Many parents want to know how their child is doing compared to the average student. It is natural for all parents to want their child to be the brightest and learn the fastest, but it isn’t really necessary. All children are learning at their natural rates and will learn what they need in their own time if allowed to.
However, most children 3-4 years of age do experience or pass through common developmental benchmarks.
At this age, children begin to understand that they have feelings. They know when they are happy, sad, scared or angry. They also begin to develop feelings such as fear of imaginary beings. They start to become concerned about how others act around them. As their self-esteem progresses, they begin to transcend their fears.
Playing and Learning
At this age, children become more interested in playing with others. They begin to understand the concept of “mine” and “yours” and are more willing to share with others. They develop friendships, but may have imaginary friends, too. At this age, your child will become more creative and it will show in their play.
Children 3-4 years of age will start using their imagination more and will play imaginary games or what is now called “role playing.” They are usually able to discern the difference between imagination and reality.
Language and Critical Skills
Most children begin to develop language skills and become curious about the world around them. This is when they start asking questions such as “why.”
Whatever level your child is at, it is natural. Don’t compare your child to others; just allow them to learn at their own rate.
