At any Cuddles Childcare Centre in the Perth area, your child will participate in a program called Jolly Phonics. Jolly Phonics gives children a great head start on reading before they are in school. But did you know there is a lot you can do at home as a parent to enhance your child’s language development as a baby, a toddler and a preschooler?
Language Development in Your Baby
The best thing you can do for babies, socially, emotionally and intellectually, is to talk to them naturally and often. When babies begin to respond with noises, they are actually talking back to you. When you say something, give them space to respond. You may not understand what they are saying but it is setting an early precedent for growth.
If your baby begins to babble, babble back. If your baby begins to respond in a way you can understand, such as communicating or showing obvious distaste or happiness, talk back to them as if they had said it in real words.
Always Keep Talking
As your child progresses into a toddler who can talk, keep the conversations flowing. Talk about what you are doing and what they are doing. Encourage your child to talk about things they did, things you did and things you are going to do together. Introduce new words in conversation but don’t make it seem like they are going to school.
Reading with your child from birth until whatever age they lose interest can make a world of difference in how your child develops language and reading skills. As soon as you can get them look at the page with you, take their fingers and point under each word as you speak it. Soon, they will be able to do it themselves.
Letting Your Child Lead
When your child begins to lead conversation, follow. Talk about what they want to talk about. It is great for their self-image.
