Every Cuddles Childcare Centre in the Perth area offers Jolly Phonics. Jolly Phonics is not only the most efficient way to teach children to read and write; it is so much fun that it doesn’t feel like “school.” It uses 42 letter sounds or “synthetic phonics” to help children become literate. Each sound also has an action associated with it, which can make a huge difference for kinesthetic learners.
Jolly Phonics teaches children five skills to help them read and write faster. We have already covered the first three skills: learning the letter sounds, learning the letter formation and blending. The next skill is identifying sounds in words.
When a child learns to read, they also need to listen for the sounds in the words. That enables them to write the words themselves. Jolly Phonics helps children break down the sounds they are hearing. The ability to hear and identify each individual sound in a word is called phonological awareness.
Jolly Phonics starts with a word such as “cat.” The child is taught to identify the three sounds using such techniques such as Jolly Jingles, poems and rhyming games. The idea is to turn listening for and identifying sounds into games. Since games are fun, children don’t have to be persuaded to learn the sounds. Instead of the drudgery of the “rote” method, children are having fun, playing games and identifying letter sounds.
The more a child identifies sounds, plays games plays with words and looks at word families, the more they understand how sounds and words work and what part the letters play in the process. The Jolly Phonics method is the fastest way to help a student make the connection between reading and writing.
