We offer child care for families in Vic Park and other Perth suburbs. Over the years, we have learned that one of the most common frustrations for parents and child care workers alike is understanding children.
Children often engage in behaviours that make no sense to adults, causing a lot of concern. Child care workers see a lot of this kind of behaviour and are taught a three step process: observe, document and analyse. You may find it enlightening to use this approach at home too.
When a behaviour happens once, it can be an isolated incident. But when it happens over and over, it is a pattern. Once you find a pattern, you have a great chance figuring out what causes it and how to stop it.
Your first step is to document the behaviour by simply writing it down. Sometimes this helps you remember incidents that may have been “under your radar” but are part of a pattern. When you can see incidents on paper in front of you, it is easy to detect patterns and causes that you might not otherwise see.
One way of finding patterns is to use the ABC model, which means “Antecedent-Behaviour-Consequence.” The antecedent is the event that happened before the behaviour and the consequence is the event that happened afterwards.
For example, your child may have spilled a drink on the couch. Was your child getting ready for school or told to hurry up? Was she distracted by music or the TV? Did it happen after you left the room?
What was the consequence? Did you yell at your child? Did you send her to her room?
Believe it or not, antecedents and consequences can both help you figure out why the behaviour is happening.
