At every Cuddles Childcare Centre in the Perth area, which offers services to different suburbs such as Queens Park, we provide a safe, nurturing environment where your children can learn through play and develop the skills that will help them succeed in school from the very beginning. One of the ways we do that is by praising children to reinforce good behaviour.
Praise is only one part of the equation, though. Encouragement and rewards are closely related to praise. Through praise, encouragement and rewards, children develop a healthy sense of self while being taught what behaviours are appropriate and helpful as they enter school and eventually become adults.
What is Praise?
Praise is the act of telling your child something positive or what you like about their behaviour. When your child is very small, remember that you are their entire life. They want to be like you and they want you to display that you love them. They also love to be told that you approve of them. Praise is a great way to do that.
Telling your child exactly what you liked about something they did is called “descriptive praise.” For example, you can say, “I love how you picked up your toys today.” This reinforces the good behaviour and helps build the child’s self-esteem.
As your child gets older, you will find different things to praise them for. No matter how they react, even as teenagers, they need praise and want praise.
What is Encouragement?
Encouragement is basically the act of giving praise for one’s effort. There are two ways to use encouragement. First, you can praise them for effort they already expended, such as: “You worked really hard to learn your ABC’s.” You can also use encouragement to steer your child towards a task or behaviour, such as by saying, “Show me how fast you are at putting your toys away.”
What are Rewards?
We all know the answer to this, but for a child it is a tangible form of praise for something they did. It can be a toy, a treat or extra privileges.
