Our child care centres serve various Perth suburbs such as Cannington and Wattle Grove. We work with the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF), also known as “Belonging, Being and Becoming.” We love the framework because we can see how much practising it helps children grow, mature and become ready for school and life.
Wouldn’t it be great if you could help your children grow and learn like they do with the EYLF? You can do just that with something that is actually helpful to you: giving them simple chores.
Between the ages of two and four, children are the most enthusiastic they will ever be about wanting their parents to like them. They will be happy to do chores for you, as long as they are simple things that don’t become a “grind.” They are also at their peak of wanting to be like their parents. If you ask them to do things that you also do, they will jump at the opportunity and they will have fun.
Depending upon the chore, children develop motor skills, math skills, reasoning ability and experience. The experience in helping with tasks as diverse as cooking and washing the car helps a child become well-rounded. If you have a garden, teach your child how to plant a flower. Imagine the look of joy and wonder on their face on the first day the flower begins to peek through the ground.
There are many small chores you can start with for a pre-schooler. They can clean their own plate, set the table, help with simple tasks in the kitchen while you are cooking, fold towels, help weed the garden, clean their own messes (or help you with the bigger ones), wash their own plastic dishes and cups or help with dusting and vacuuming.
Keep it Fun
Make sure to keep it fun for your child and don’t expect them to be perfect.
