Taking your child to a childcare centre, whether in Cannington or any Perth suburb, can be rough on both the child and parent. We covered the separation anxiety issue elsewhere on our blog, but we would like to also provide some general tips on helping your child adjust to a childcare centre. We know there are more issues than just separation anxiety. Here are some tips to help your child adjust to the childcare centre smoothly and quickly.
Be sure your child knows they will be going to a childcare centre long before child care starts. As we mentioned in the Separation Anxiety article, it is helpful to go to the centre with your child a few times and get to know the facility, the other children and the carers. Answer all of their questions fully and honestly.
The first few times, it is a good idea to get there at least fifteen minutes early and help your child get “settled in” with an activity. If they are having fun, they are not as likely to be hurt when you leave. Make sure your child has a familiar object from home, such as a favourite blanket or toy. This helps “ground” your child when he or she feels upset or anxious.
Always project confidence to your child, verbally and with strong “body language.” Your child will mimic your behaviour. Whatever you do, don’t sneak out when your child is otherwise occupied. This will create anxiety and other issues. It could make your child “clingy” even at home.
If your child throws tantrums when you drop him or her off, have your partner or a friend take your child to the childcare centre instead. If your child has problems at the child care centre, ask the carer for insight.
