In twenty years of providing child care for Perth suburbs such as Wattle Grove, we have learned a lot about what makes some children behave and others not. It is our job to gently but firmly ensure that children behave in a manner that is not harmful nor distracting to other children and will set them up well for “getting along” with peers and teachers when they enter school.
Here are some great tips about encouraging good behaviour in your child.
Be a Good Role Model
Whether you like it or not, you are your preschooler’s most important role model. Children want to be just like their parents. If you don’t say “please,” your child won’t. If you demonstrate anger on a regular basis, so will your child. The positive side: if you want your child to behave well, all you have to do is act like you want your child to act and let them imitate you.
Show Your Feelings to Your Child
If your child acts up, communicate how it makes you feel. This helps them identify feelings and develop empathy for others. Most children can feel empathy by the time they are three years of age. For example, if you say, “I am getting upset because there is so much noise I can’t hear anything on the phone,” your child can see things from your point of view.
Positive Feedback = Positive Results
A lot of parents tend to only let their child know when they are doing something wrong. Be sure to tell your child how much you appreciate it when you see them doing the right thing. Say something like, “I really like the way you are keeping your room so neat” or, “You are really playing nicely with your brother today.”
