Running a childcare centre in Cannington or any Perth suburb teaches a person a lot about children. One of the most common problems is how to handle it when a child cries. Now that we have a dedicated baby room in each of our three locations in the Perth area, we have learned even more about why babies cry.
Babies use crying to communicate. It means they are not comfortable in some way. Your baby can be scared, tired, hungry, hot, cold, uncomfortable or in pain. In a childcare centre, babies often cry because they miss their mums. Often, just holding them will be enough to calm them down. But sometimes, it isn’t enough. Here are some strategies you can use.

Strategies for Calming a Crying Baby
The first thing to do is offer a bottle. For you, it could obviously be a breast. Either way, the child will either feed or refuse and keep crying. Next, try holding, rocking gently and soothing. If that doesn’t work, check to see if your baby is tired. That can be done by wrapping him or her in a blanket and laying him or her down in a place where it is easy to sleep.
If that doesn’t work, your baby may be uncomfortable. Check to see if the nappy needs to be changed. If your baby has a rash, you can rinse it, pat it dry and apply a cream. If not, try “burping” your baby. Eventually, something should work. If nothing works and your baby won’t stop crying for a long period of time, it could be a sign of something serious and you should call a doctor.
